Chega MP Rita Matias has admitted the possibility that Chega will support the possible candidacy of former Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho for the post of President of the Republic.
In an interview with Renaissancepublished this Friday, the lawmaker began by distancing herself from the presidential race, citing an Intercampus poll for CM which puts Chega President André Ventura third in Portugal’s preferences for Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s successor.
“We also have the interesting fact of Pedro Passos Coelho, who is listed as a second option. I do not jeopardize any support from the party with this,” suggested Rita Matias.
The MP understands that the Social Democrat has “significantly more flags that intersect with Chega than with the current PSD”, as Ventura had already emphasized during Passos’ participation in the presentation of the book “Identity and Family”, in the texts of which they criticize “gender ideology” and “the culture of death”.
Presidential elections are scheduled for January 2026.
