According to estimates by the PSP and GNR road departments, more than 50,000 drivers without a driving licence or with an expired driving licence travel on Portuguese roads every day.
About a year ago, the Institute of Mobility and Transport notified about 55,000 drivers that their licenses had expired more than two years ago, reminding them that the government had created an emergency regime that allowed licenses to be renewed without the need for any examination, even for those who had allowed them to expire more than ten years ago.
According to Público, only 15,000 people took advantage of this exemption, which was in effect until the 1st of this month, while the remaining 40,000 had to take a new driving test if they wanted to continue to obtain their license.
A source at GNR reported CM that “all the data indicate” that more than 50,000 people are driving on our roads without a license or with an expired license. Last year, almost 15,000 were caught.
The license must be renewed at 50, 60 and 70 years of age, and then every two years.
