Farmers will be able to count on exceptional support of 60 million euros in 2025

Farmers will receive exceptional support of 60 million euros in 2025 to compensate for the underfunding of measures under the General Strategic Plan for Agricultural Policy (PEPAC), according to a resolution published this Wednesday in Diário da República.

The measure, approved by the Council of Ministers on the 8th, aims to “compensate for the lack of funding for environmental programmes on climate, environment and animal welfare, namely organic farming, integrated production and animal welfare, as well as the rational use of antimicrobials, not covered by European funds.”

PEPAC for Portugal for the period 2023-2027 “brings together support measures to achieve specific European Union objectives within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)”.

The decision also concerns the government’s agriculture and fisheries programme, whose strategic objectives are aimed at “restoring the sector’s growth dynamics, increasing producers’ incomes and ensuring the stability and predictability of support”.

The Council of Ministers also decided that the above-mentioned measure “shall be introduced and regulated by order of the members of the government responsible for finance and agriculture.”

According to the resolution, within the framework of the reprogramming of PEPAC Portugal regarding “Rural Development” and “Integrated Territorial Approach”, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries must define an increase in national co-financing of up to 60 million euros per year, from 2026 to 2029.

“It is essential to promote the value of the agricultural, forestry and fisheries sectors and the role they play in economic, environmental and social sustainability. These objectives cannot be achieved without investment in research, innovation and development, in the digitalization of the sector and in the renewal of generations,” the executive director emphasizes in the order.
