Kristalina Georgieva Nominates Nigel Clarke for IMF Deputy Director General

The director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has nominated Jamaican Finance Minister Nigel Clarke to be the organization’s deputy director general.

“Clark is an exceptional public servant and political leader who has demonstrated leadership in institutional development and economic crisis management, leading his country’s economy to a stronger and more sustainable position,” Kristalina Georgieva said in a letter to the Executive Board.

The Jamaican minister will take up the post on October 31, 2024, replacing Antoinette Saye, who will step down on September 12.

Nigel Clarke has been Jamaica’s Minister of Finance and the Public Service since March 2018, and is also a member of parliament and the IMF’s principal interlocutor on Jamaica’s programmes. Prior to that, he was the country’s economic ambassador since 2016, spearheading reforms such as central bank independence and the creation of an independent financial commission.
