Elisa Ferreira wishes Albuquerque ‘all the best’ in strengthening European project

Outgoing EU Commissioner for Portugal Elisa Ferreira on Wednesday wished Maria Luís Albuquerque “all the best” for her next term as the EU executive, wishing her “good work” in strengthening the European project and “in the interests of the national interest”.

“I wish the Portuguese Commissioner-designate Maria Luis Albuquerque all the best. Good work in strengthening European construction and in the interests of national interests,” wrote Elisa Ferreira on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

Elisa Ferreira is the current Commissioner for Cohesion and Reform, responsible for European funds.

The Portuguese government has nominated former Finance Minister Maria Luis Albuquerque as its candidate for the post of European Commissioner, the Prime Minister announced on Wednesday.

The former ruler’s name was announced by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro in a statement at his official residence in Sao Bento without any questions.

In a short statement, the prime minister said he had chosen María Luis Albuquerque with the support of the entire government in a process that took place with “total modesty” and stressed the authority of the former minister of state and finance under Pedro Passos Coelho.

“Based on his profile and my direct and personal knowledge of his abilities, I know he will bring honour to Portugal,” he said.

Maria Luis Albuquerque, 56, was minister of state and finance during Portugal’s troika bailout, replacing Vitor Gaspar in July 2013 and remaining until the end of the executive led by Pedro Passos Coelho.
