The President of the Republic said this Sunday that he is convinced that the State Budget (GB) will be adopted for 2025, stating that he trusts “common sense” at a “decisive moment” and because “this is what the Portuguese want”.
“I am convinced that next year’s budget will be viable for a very simple reason (…) I do not see that in this environment, at a decisive moment, common sense does not matter, because this is what the Portuguese want,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in Aveiro on the sidelines of the National Youth Meeting.
The head of state insisted that the Portuguese “do not want” a political crisis resulting from the leadership of the Assembly of the Republic of the OE for 2025: “If you ask the Portuguese whether they want a political crisis in a month and a half or two, I think that if there was a vote on this issue, the overwhelming majority would say ‘no’.”
In addition to what he said was the will of the Portuguese, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa explained why he does not believe that the document will be rejected in Parliament: “With the situation in the world, with the possibility of printing, starting with the American elections, but also with the situation in the world, with the possibility of printing, starting with the American elections, but also the beginning of a new European cycle, with the wars that continue, with economic indecision, even in the large European economies that are not growing and not recovering, I do not believe that there is anyone who avoids dialogue to achieve a budget.”
“I have been thinking about this for several months now, and it is evidence that the Portuguese want there to be no political crises in October or November of this year,” he repeated.
As for the negotiations between the government and the opposition, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa preferred not to comment: “This is a matter that the parties will know how to manage, and the Assembly of the Republic will have the final say. I am only saying what seems to me, walking around the country, the state of mind of the Portuguese people.”
“The Portuguese, some agree more, some agree less, as a solution more or less, want more or less in a certain area, were asked what they think about the idea of a budget failure and a crisis in the period from October to November. Politics, do you think? I think the Portuguese do not need it, looking at the world, Europe and the situation in the country,” he insisted again.
