This Friday, the Assembly of the Republic commemorated the victims of the war in Ukraine with a moment of silence on the day that marks one year since the beginning of the Russian invasion, without the presence of the PKP and PAN.
At 09:00 a minute of silence was held in the atrium of Passos Perdidos with the participation of the President of the Assembly of the Republic Augusto Santos Silva, Deputy Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Ana Catarina Mendez and Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Ukraine in Lisbon Volodymyr Kozlov.
The symbolic initiative was attended by MPs from various parties, including PS parliamentary leaders, Eurico Brillante Diaz, Chega, Pedro Pinto, Liberal Initiative, Rodrigo Saraiva, coordinator and BE parliamentary leader, Catarina Martins and Pedro Filipe Soares (respectively), Livre’s only deputy, Ruy Tavares, former leader of the SDP Parliament and Vice President of the Assembly of the Republic of Adao Silva, as well as bureau members and parliamentary staff.
PCP MPs and the only PAN MP, Inés de Souza Real, did not participate in the initiative.
An official source in the office of Ines de Souza explained the absence of a deputy in Luz’s agency by saying that the work of a possible commission to review the constitution ended on Thursday after 22:30.
In a statement released on Thursday, the PKP considered the Portuguese government’s “stance of submission” to “arms escalation” in Ukraine “particularly serious” and said it was urgent for “the United States, NATO and the European Union to stop warmongering and warmongering.”
In the memo, the communists believed that “reality suggests that presented as a war between Russia and Ukraine, it is, in fact, a war between the United States of America (USA) and NATO with Russia, within the framework of the strategy of hegemonic domination of American imperialism” and that ” Ukraine and the authorities established there are being used as an instrument of this dangerous militant action at the expense of the victims of the Ukrainian people.”
To commemorate the year of the war, on Thursday evening the facade of the Assembly of the Republic was illuminated in the colors of the Ukrainian flag (blue and yellow), and this Friday at 10:00 a thematic debate took place, lasting about two hours. proposed by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, with statements by himself, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the parties.
During the voting period, a vote of solidarity with Ukraine, proposed by the Speaker of the Parliament, will take place, and at 14:00 Santos Silva will take part in a colloquium organized by the Portugal-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group.
