Most of the adoption bills voted this Friday in the Assembly of the Republic were approved unanimously, and now diplomas will be discussed by specialty, with the exception of Chega’s bill.
Among the eight bills regarding the adoption process that were put to the vote, five were to increase the maximum age until which a child can be adopted to 18, with proposals from Block de Esquerdes (BE), the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP). ), People-Animals-Nature Party (PAN), Free and Liberal Initiative (IL).
Of these five bills, BE, PCP, PAN, and IL have been unanimously approved and are currently being debated by specialty in the Commission on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms, and Guarantees.
The Livre bill, which, in addition to addressing the age issue, advocates lowering the minimum age of those who can adopt to 25 years, so that these people can live in a de facto union, and so that a child can consent to adoption from the age of 8 , among others, was approved by votes in favor of the Socialist Party (PS) and the Liberal Initiative (IL), which was also discussed by the commission.
The second bill from PCP to reopen admissions and empowerment programs for children and young people at risk, and which proposes that young people over the age of 18 with promotions and protections can re-enter the system in cases in which they are asked to leave and then regret it, was approved by the votes of almost all parties, with the exception of Chega, who abstained, and also reached the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees.
Chega’s bill was the only one voted down by the PS and the Liberal Initiative and proposed amendments to the Civil Code, the Legal Framework for Adoption and the Labor Code to reduce the number of children placed in institutions. through an accelerated acceptance process.
A draft PAN resolution was also voted on, recommending the government to adopt a comprehensive and rapid policy to promote adoption, which was also unanimously approved and submitted to the committee.
