This Thursday, the Assembly of the Republic approved, with votes against BE and PCP, the vote of regret presented by the President of Parliament on the death of Adriano Moreira last Sunday at the age of 100.
PS MP Rui Lage also abstained, while the rest of the benches and MPs voted in favor.
In an explanation of the vote provided to journalists, BE justified the no vote by saying that “without prejudice to recognizing the relevance of the post-April 25 democratic path and the academic career of Adriano Moreira”, Parliament cannot pay this tribute without recognizing “the person responsible for a critical moment in Portuguese colonial history, when the dictatorship unleashed a war that will last 13 years.”
“In our opinion, the proposed vote of regret does not fulfill this duty of remembrance and therefore cannot be approved by the left bloc,” they justify.
The text of the vote submitted by Augusto Santos Silva refers to Adriano Moreira as a “reference figure in Portuguese academia and an active participant” in Portuguese public life.
The vote is reminiscent of “his long political career”, which included the period from 1961 to 1963 as Foreign Minister of the Estado Novo, and highlights Adriano Moreira’s connection to the Assembly of the Republic.
“Having been elected as an MP in 1980 for the Democratic and Social Center (CDS), the party of which he would become president, he would be re-elected to the next four legislatures until 1995. He was vice president. Assembly of the Republic in the period from 1991 to 1995, from 2015 to 2019 he was a state adviser, elected by parliament,” the text emphasizes.
The vote also recalls “the important contribution of Adriano Moreira to the establishment of Christian democracy and the social doctrine of the church.”
“Adriano Moreira has also been a leading figure in the Portuguese University, namely in the field of strategic and geopolitical studies, marking the generations of students in the current Instituto Superior de Ciências Socias e Políticas (ISCSP) as well as in other institutions such as higher military schools. He was also an eminent member and director of several academies,” he adds.
The vote also recalls the “numerous honorary awards” that Adriano Moreira has received throughout his life, most recently the Grand Cross of the Order of the Infante D. Enrique de Portugal in 2017 and the Grand Cross of the Order of Camões. Portugal, 2022.
“The Assembly of the Republic, assembled in plenary session, expresses its deep regret over the death of Adriano Moreira, expressing the deepest condolences to the family, as well as CDS,” the vote reads.
Parliament also unanimously approved a vote of condolence presented by PS on the death of Alvaro Pedro, former mayor of Alenquer.
Born on 3 December 1938 in Abrigada, municipality of Alenquer, Alvaro Pedro was on the first administrative committee of the city council of Alenquer after 25 April 1974 and was the first president of the city council of Alenquer to win a free election. held this position until 2009.
“His tireless devotion to the cause and service to society, as well as all the work he has done throughout his political career, leave us a legacy and will forever remain in the memory of everyone,” emphasizes the vote presented by the socialist bench.
