The islands of São Miguel and Santa Maria in the Azores will be under an orange alert from noon this Friday due to forecasts for occasional heavy rains, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has said.
On these two islands in the eastern group of the Azores archipelago, the orange warning will be in effect from 15:00 to 20:00 local time (9:00 in Lisbon) this Friday, and then change to yellow until 23:00, according to IPMA.
Such deterioration of the weather in the Eastern Group, with the possibility of heavy precipitation at times, is associated with the passage of a cold frontal surface with undulations.
An orange alert is the second most severe and represents a meteorological situation of moderate or high risk.
A Yellow Alert is issued by IPMA whenever a risk situation arises for certain weather dependent activities.
