The Ministry of State demanded this Wednesday, during closing arguments in court, that a young man accused of qualified murder in 2022 in Torres Vedras, in the Lisbon area, be convicted, although he did not offer a prison sentence.
The crime took place during the Torres Vedras carnival, in the early morning of February 26, 2022, when the defendant Bruno Romao found the victim on the street with his ex-girlfriend.
In the first court session, the defendant admitted that he had killed a 32-year-old man.
As described in the indictment of the Ministry of State (MP), the defendant was motivated by “unreasonable jealousy and a thirst for contempt”, although Bruno Romao denies this thesis.
Without an inquiry into the causes of the murder, “there is no doubt that a dispute arose between the accused and the victim and that at some point Mr. Bruno pulled out the knife he had with him and stuck it in the victim’s chest.” , says the prosecutor .
At the first trial, which takes place in the Loures court, the defendant stated that he had a “memory blackout” due to being in a state of intoxication and hashish.
However, the prosecutor said this Wednesday that the condition “is not the reason for anything” and that “anyone who has the ability to take a knife out of his pocket is aware of what he is doing.”
The prosecutor recalled the backstory of the defendant, who was convicted twice for domestic violence, for which “he will have to be convicted,” although he did not indicate the prison term.
The defense lawyer criticized the “unforgivable flaw” of the process: “no one from the judicial police and the public security police remembered that the defendant had been tested for alcohol and drugs,” stressing that the examination in this case was not authorized. matter.
While acknowledging that Bruno “repented from the first hour”, the lawyer requested that the sentence should not exceed eight and a half years in prison, bearing in mind the age of the young man (22 at the time of the presentation of the facts), for which he “deserves an opportunity”. for the future, he argued.
During this Wednesday’s hearing, which was held at minimum service due to the ongoing strike of judicial officials, three more people were heard: a close friend of the victim, as well as a friend and ex-girlfriend of the accused. .
Bruno’s former companion Romana stated that she met the victim on the night of the crime and that in the morning they were heading to a bar, but the defendant, seeing the man who would later die, “went before him with the intention of stabbing him.”
After the confusion between them, which the ex-girlfriend said she did not see because she entered the bar, she left the establishment and found the victim on the floor while another man was beating Bruno, he said.
“Bruno didn’t say,” he said, leaving the defendant at home, not realizing that a crime had taken place.
A close friend of the deceased described the defendant as quarreling and that when he arrived at the hospital where the victim was, “he screamed, calling her name.”
“He seemed unable to believe what he had done,” explained the man, who did not witness the events.
The reading of the verdict is scheduled for March 22.
