Montenegro denies that the political situation in the Azores will affect the PSD/Madeira in the next elections

SDP President Luis Montenegro this Thursday dismissed claims that the political situation in the Azores will affect SDP/Madeira in the regional legislative elections to be held this year, ensuring he has “very much” confidence in the Madeira leader. Executive Director Miguel Albuquerque.

“I have a lot of confidence in the PSD of Madeira, I have a lot of confidence in Dr. Miguel Albuquerque as President of the PSD and the regional government, and I can assure you that this trust is such that I do not expect anything but support. from the voters of Madeira to the work that he and the SDP have done, and as a result, to winning an absolute majority in the regional parliament in this year’s elections,” said Luis Montenegro.

The leader of the Social Democrats spoke to reporters at the end of his visit to the Madeira International Business Center in the Parish of Caniçal.

Asked if the political situation in the Azores could infect Madeira, Luis Montenegro assured that the region was “contaminated by the reformist and transformative capacity of the regional government.”

The SDP chairman added that he was optimistic about the regional elections scheduled for this year, which have not yet been called by the President of the Republic, taking into account the “inefficiency, inefficiency and inconsistency of the opposition.”

“We have the democratic humility of those who have not yet won elections, but we have good personnel, we have a great prime minister, we have a job and we have an opposition that does not offer a credible or consistent alternative. There are grounds for optimism,” he said.

When asked if he spoke this Thursday with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, about the situation in the Azores, Luis Montenegro declined to answer.

“I don’t think it’s important to say,” he remarked.

On the other hand, to the question whether he expects Marcelo Rebelo de Souza to conform to his ideas in the interview he will give this evening, or, on the contrary, fears that he will take on the opposition to his policies as President of the PSD, Luis Montenegro replied that the recipient of his actions were the Portuguese and not the President of the Republic.

Montenegro stated that “the SDP and its leader are doing their job” and “the President of the Republic is doing his”.

The leader of the Social Democrats also emphasized that he “voted twice without hesitation for Professor Marcelo Rebela de Souza”, believing that “he was a good president of the republic.

MPs from the Liberal and Independent Initiative (formerly Chega) in the Azores parliament on Wednesday violated agreements signed with the regional government’s parties after the 2020 elections.

The SDP, CDS-PP and PPM coalition has 26 MPs in the Legislative Assembly and now only has parliamentary support for an MP up to Cheg, thus adding 27 seats.

Previously, with the support of an independent MP and the elected Liberal Initiative, he had 29 seats, which allowed the executive branch to manage an absolute majority.
