Fenprof announces national strike and demonstration for 6 June

The National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof) announced this Thursday a nationwide strike and a demonstration of teachers on June 6 for the restoration of frozen working hours.

Fenprof General Secretary Mario Nogueira told reporters about this after an additional meeting on the new regime for the recruitment and placement of teachers, which ended without agreement.

Leaving the Ministry of Education in Lisbon, Mario Nogueira stated that the date (06/06/23) of the national strike and demonstration deliberately coincides with the frozen service period for teachers (since the Troika): six years, six months. and 23 days.

According to Mario Nogueira, “the struggle does not stop” until this and other “aspects” are resolved.

In addition to restoring full working time (for teachers teaching in mainland Portugal), Fenprof is demanding that issues such as retirement and mobility due to illness be addressed.

Fenprof also promises, at a time to be determined, a new strike by districts (18 working days, one day per district), a strike of the entire non-academic component (meetings, extraordinary services…), a strike until the last training time for each teacher and strikes estimated.

Mario Nogueira acknowledged that a new district strike could take place in the second school period or on the first day of school in the third period, and an evaluation strike could take place at the end of the school year.

The general secretary of Fenprof said that the department intends to meet with trade unions on March 20 to “start discussing other issues.”

However, according to the National Federation of Teachers, which influences CGTP-In, there is “no” in the list of subjects of the “priority issue” which is “reinstatement of seniority”, for which Fenprof has put forward that it will submit a proposal to the guardianship authorities on Monday that , which “is forced to open a negotiation process for the recovery of the entire period of service.”

The teachers’ protests, which included demonstrations and various strikes, began in December last year.

The strike in the districts took place from January 16 to February 8.
