Nuno Barata of the Liberal Initiative (IL) and Carlos Furtado, an independent MP, admitted this Friday that they were holding “pinpoint” talks with the Azores government to maintain state stability in the region, despite violating parliamentary agreements on the bar.
“IL is available in the name of stability to speak, improve and liberalize all these diplomas, and reach the end of the legislature, no matter what date it ends,” the liberal deputy guaranteed in statements to journalists, so that on the sidelines of the plenary session of the regional assembly, the meeting in Horta.
The same understanding is shared by Carlos Furtado, an MP elected by Chega in October 2020 in the last regional legislative elections, but who, however, became independent after disagreements with the national leader of the party Andre Ventura.
“What has happened so far is precisely point negotiations. I vote with the coalition, but I vote by conviction. And this is what I will do when I see fit,” said Carlos Furtado, recalling that he also voted differently than a coalition in government consisting of PSD, CDS-PP and PPM, as happened, for example, with regard to tourism tax.
The two MPs were heard by journalists in response to the statements of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, who said yesterday in an interview with RTP and Público that he expects diligence between the MPs who broke up the parliamentary incident. agreements and President of the Azores Executive, José Manuel Boleiro.
“I was informed that contacts are underway to find out whether the elements that have withdrawn from the support base, whether they agree or not, nonetheless provide parliamentary support to the government and on what conditions,” the head of state said. referring to the crisis policy in the Azores.
Nuno Barata assures that he has not spoken to anyone yet: “I don’t know who the President of the Republic was talking to, but he probably talked to the gods who deceive him, because there was no conversation with me. far”.
The Liberal MP recalled that even so, he made “tremendous efforts” to ensure that there was “stability” in parliament, blaming the three parties that form the government for “instability” in the region.
“Instability in the government and in the coalition! It is not in the parliamentary agreements on incidents,” stressed Nuno Barata, who believes that the executive branch, headed by the social democrat José Manuel Bolleiro, “has an approved budget” and therefore, “has the right” to continue to govern, “at least until date of adoption of the next budget document.
Carlos Furtado, an independent MP, admitted that he met this Friday “unofficially” with the chairman of the regional government, with whom he says he has an agreement to approve some diplomas, but he reserves a position on the next plenary meeting plan and budget.
“The fact that I have refused to continue this parliamentary agreement on the bar does not change my way of life, I continue to think the same as I thought two days ago, with only one difference. I realized that the time has come to say enough so that certain situations that occur,” the independent MP guaranteed, referring to the “nominations”, “intervention” and “favor” of the executive branch, with which he disagrees.
On Wednesday, the lone “Liberal Initiative” MP in the Azores parliament, Nuno Barata, broke the parliamentary agreement on advocacy in support of the regional government of the Azores, led by social democrat José Manuel Bolleiro, and then independent Carlos Furtado, who was enough, also violated this agreement.
Thus, the regional executive body of the SDP/CDU-PP/PPM coalition received the support of only 27 deputies instead of the original 29, retaining the parliamentary agreement on advocacy with Chega. He lacks an MP to win a majority in the 57-member Azores Parliament.
PS won the regional legislative elections in the Azores on 25 October 2020, but lost the absolute majority it had held for 20 years, electing 25 deputies.
On November 7, the representative of the republic nominated the leader of the regional structure of the PSD, José Manuel Boleiru, for the post of chairman of the regional government, justifying this decision by the fact that the PSD/CDU-PP/PPM coalition had the support that gave it absolute majority power in the legislative assembly.
On the other hand, Pedro Catarino stressed at the time that the PS does not represent “any government coalition”, despite winning the elections.
