The Azores government will support from 2 to 8 thousand euros to young people who commit to working in the archipelago for at least five years, a measure whose rules were published this Monday in the Official Journal.
The wage increase measure proposed by the Regional Secretariat for Youth, Housing and Employment, for which applications open on Thursday, is part of the “+Young” package aimed at attracting and retaining talent in the Azores and includes a total of seven measures.
In this particular case, the maximum amount of support provided under the talent attraction programme is 2,000 euros for graduates, 5,000 euros for masters and 8,000 euros for PhD holders.
“The support provided has two objectives: one support to attract talent and the other to retain talent, both financial and for a period of five years,” said a note issued by the regional executive authority (PSD/CDS -PP/PPM).
Talent retention support applies to young people who hold a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree, or graduates with a qualification level equal to or above Level IV of the National Qualifications Framework, who file an Income Tax Return (IRS) and who have earned IRS Category A or B income.
In this case, support is provided on the basis of the estimated value of the net collection in an amount corresponding to 100%, also over a five-year period.
Young people aged 35 or younger on the date of commencement of their professional activity may benefit from the wage increase measure by concluding an open-ended or fixed-term employment contract or the ESTAGIAR L and T programmes, including young people who started their career activities on or after 1 January 2024.
According to a decree by the Regional Secretary for Youth, Housing and Employment, Maria João Carreiro, the measure aims to “reward the continuation of higher education” and “promote an increase in the salaries of qualified young people who decide to practice their professional activity in the Autonomous Region of the Azores”.
Applications for this measure can be submitted through the portal jobsjovem.azores.gov.pt.
Another measure in this “+Jovem” package is support for two air tickets per academic year (round trip) for students travelling from their home island to attend school, whether on another Azores island, Madeira or on the mainland.
On July 18, the President of the Regional Government, José Manuel Bolheiro, announced that this support measure would be retroactive to the 2023/2024 school year, with a roundtrip allocation, and the application period should open at the beginning of the 2023/2024 school year in August.
