The shooter who killed six people Thursday night at a Jehovah’s Witness center in Hamburg, Germany, Philip Fusch, 35, is a German national and a former member of a religious community with which he appears to have come into conflict, according to the British press.
At a press conference, a senior German police official stated that the gunman left Jehovah’s community about 18 months ago, “but apparently it was not on good terms.”
The Hamburg public prosecutor said that a terrorist motive had already been ruled out, and the police chief suggested during a press conference that Philipp may be suffering from a mental illness.
Hamburg police chief Ralf Martin Meyer said the suspect had a firearms license and had been legally in possession of a semi-automatic weapon since December last year.
Meyer said that Philip had already been approached by the police after an anonymous report was made in January alleging that the man had shown “anger towards groups of believers, in particular Jehovah’s Witnesses.” At the time, the man was cooperating with the police and did not show any signs that would lead the agents to find reasons to seize the weapons. “The reality is that an anonymous report when someone says that another person has a mental illness is not enough on its own to take action,” Meyer said.
On the website he created, to which daily mail had access, Philipp Fusch claims to have moved to Hamburg to work in the energy sector. He sold consulting services for which he charged 250,000 euros a day. “The value comes from the fact that my work will bring the company at least 2.5 million euros,” he wrote on the page to justify the cost.
“Doing good to others will take you back in a meaningful way from places you can’t even imagine,” he also wrote on the website, which also includes links to a book written by Philip entitled The Truth About God, Jesus Christ and Satan. A reflected new vision of epochal dimensions”.
According to Amazon, the book was published on December 20, 2022, and in the “About the Author” section, there is information that Philipp was born on September 18, 1987 and grew up in Kempten, in the Allgäu region, in southern Germany, in a very religious family. He settled in Hamburg after studying business administration and lived abroad several times.
The shooting left at least six people dead and eight others injured. A woman suffered in the seventh month of pregnancy, the fetus died. Philip committed suicide after police arrived, local authorities said.
