The Oscars are announced this Sunday, and Portugal’s Ice Dealers are vying for an unprecedented prize.

Joao González’s animated short film The Ice Traders seeks an award at the Academy Awards this Sunday night in Los Angeles, a ceremony where the favorite and most nominated film is All Everywhere at Once.

The Oscars, the North American film awards, celebrates its 95th edition this Sunday in Los Angeles, California at dawn Monday in Europe, in a ceremony that could be historic in Portugal if The Ice Dealers win Best Animated Short movie. movie.

Joao Gonzalez’s film about family ties and loss arrives in Hollywood with dozens of awards, including a record-breaking nine awards at Oscar-nominated festivals.

This year, Everything and Everywhere at Once, an independent production by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, a sci-fi comedy about parallel universes but really about the mundane problems of a family falling apart, is my favorite movie.

It is nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture or Director and in the acting categories, namely for Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu and Ke Hai Quan.

Other nominees for the Oscar for Best Picture were The Spirits of Inisherin (Martin McDonagh), The Storytellers (Steven Spielberg), Tar (Todd Field), No New West (Edward Berger), and Top Gun. : Maverick (Joseph Kosinski), Elvis (Baz Luhrmann), Avatar: Waterway (James Cameron), Women’s Voices (Sarah Polley), and Triangle of Sorrow (Ruben Östlund).

Competing for the Oscar for Best Director are Martin McDonagh, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, Steven Spielberg, Todd Field and Ruben Östlund.

This year’s nominees mark the link between auteur and independent cinema and major productions, especially with films released in theaters that have achieved significant box office success, namely the sequels “Top Gun” and “Avatar”.

The ceremony will be hosted by host Jimmy Kimmel and the organization hopes last year’s incident in which actor Will Smith attacked Chris Rock while hosting the stage will be forgotten.

The Golden Statuettes will feature, among others, Nicole Kidman, Glenn Close, Ariana DeBose, Andrew Garfield and Jessica Chastain, as well as performances by Rihanna and Lenny Kravitz.
