The Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) seized more than 11,000 liters of olive oil and vegetable oil in the municipality of Penela, Coimbra district.
The ASAE said in a statement that it carried out “through the Specialized Anti-Fraud Brigade of the Central Regional Unit – Operational Unit of Coimbra – an inspection operation aimed at combating criminal offenses against public health in a food wholesaler located in the district of Coimbra.”
“As a result of the action, thousands of packages of edible oil and olive oil, extra virgin olive oil and extra virgin olive oil were found, ready for commercial circulation, on the label of which there were no and / or illegible mandatory mentions, such as the batch, the date of the minimum expiration date and full address of the operator responsible for placing the product on the market.
The ASAE referred to the fact that “the relevant administrative offense proceedings were initiated for the absence, inaccuracy or lack of mandatory labeling, with the seizure of 1215 packages of vegetable oil and 1134 packages of olive oil, which corresponds to 11392 liters of product”, in a larger amount up to 40 thousand euros.
An ASAE source told Lusa that the inspection was carried out late last week in the municipality of Penela.
The ASAE also guaranteed that, “given the importance that the olive oil sector represents to the national economy, it will continue to develop olive oil inspection activities throughout the country in favor of healthy and fair competition among economic operators, in ensuring food safety and health consumers.”
