The Union of Journalists of Angola (SJA) described pressure on the owner of Camundanews to suspend the broadcast of journalistic content for an alleged violation of the Press Law as an infringement on press freedom.
In a press release accessed by Lusa today, the SJA denounces “abuse of power and obstruction of press freedom as pressure on the owner of Camundanews to stop broadcasting news content and calls on the social media regulator to act in defense of press freedom.”
In the communiqué, the trade union recalls that the only restrictions established by the Constitution for the exercise of freedom of the press are the right of everyone to a good name, honor and reputation, image and inviolability of private and family life, the protection of childhood and youth. , state secrets, judicial secrets and other guarantees of these rights.
The SJA emphasizes that the distribution of journalistic content through YouTube or any other digital platform does not violate the Constitution or the Press Law, nor does it oblige the author of the distribution to represent himself as a journalistic company.
In a note, the SJA emphasizes that for the dissemination of journalistic content via the Internet, the law establishes only as a presumption that restrictions on the exercise of freedom of the press must be observed.
For the union, the current picture of press freedom in Angola “suffocates journalists and privately owned bodies and condemns the tightening of government censorship.”
We are talking about the suspension for an indefinite period of broadcasting of the Camundanews TV channel after an interrogation by the owner of the project, David Boyo.
A week ago, David Boyo was summoned for the second time by the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC), after the first in October 2022, to undergo an interrogation, the topic of which was allegedly focused on the criminal trial of the public figure and musician of Angola “Gangsta”, also dealing with the legal issues of the work project.
