Teacher Candidates Make Up 48% of Dropouts

This year there are 14% more teacher candidates entering higher education, but this number is still far from making up for teachers’ retirement.

A total of 727 students were placed in basic education (kindergarten and 1st and 2nd grade teachers), which is 101 more than last year.
If we add those who entered the Faculty of Education Sciences, the number rises to 1,161. The problem is that about 2,400 teachers are expected to retire this year, and entrants make up only 48% of the dropouts.

By 2030, 40% of teaching staff should retire, according to a Nova SBE study that indicates a need to recruit 3,400 teachers a year. This year, 1,161 teacher candidates make up 34% of the required 3,400 people. The direction of teacher training has become a priority and this year there are 56 more vacancies – 212 remained unfilled.
