Transtejo spends millions of euros on electric boats without batteries

Transtejo spent 52.4 million euros to purchase 10 electric ships. However, only one has a battery. For the remainder of the vessels, Transtejo has secured another contract under a direct agreement worth EUR 15.5 million for the purchase of batteries.

The Accounts Chamber accuses the company of “failure to tell the truth”, as well as illegal and irrational actions, referring the decision to the State Ministry. “Transtech bought the whole ship and nine incomplete ships, unable to function because they were not equipped with batteries. Also, with the necessary modifications, the purchase of a car without an engine, a motorcycle without wheels or a bicycle without pedals, with its preservation for the subsequent procedure after its purchase,” the Accounts Chamber considered. As soon as the verdict became known, the leadership of Transtejo resigned. For the company’s president, Marina Ferreira, the positions of the Accounts Chamber are “insulting and outrageous.”

However, the supervisory authority emphasizes that “Transtech said one thing and the opposite to the Accounts Chamber in a short period of time.” “The assumptions on the basis of which the court decided to issue a visa [no primeiro contrato submetido] were wrong because the essence lacked the truth.” The total cost of the project is 82.3 million euros, including 14.4 million for the creation of four energy charging stations.
