International Criminal Court issues arrest warrant for Russian president

The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of involvement in war crimes committed in Ukraine.

According to Reuters, Moscow has repeatedly denied accusations of atrocities committed by its forces during the invasion of Ukraine.

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin on suspicion of illegal deportation of children and illegal movement of people from Ukraine to the Russian Federation.

Earlier this week, Reuters reported that the court was due to issue a warrant, the first in its investigation into the conflict in Ukraine.

Separately, the court issued warrants to Maria Alekseevna Lvova-Belova, Ombudsman of the Russian Federation for Children’s Rights, on the same charges.

The ICC’s decision comes a day after a UN-authorized investigative body accused Russia of committing far-reaching war crimes in Ukraine, including targeted killings and torture, in some cases forcing children to watch family members being raped and detaining others near dead bodies. .

News of the arrest warrant also broke ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s scheduled state visit to Moscow next week.

Russia has come under unprecedented Western sanctions since it sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reacted to the incident on the social network. telegram stating that the decisions of the International Criminal Court have no meaning for the country, including from a legal point of view.
