“Following the devastating floods, the impact of Tropical Cyclone Freddy and the outbreak of cholera in the country, the EU has extended its support to Mozambique by mobilizing around US$1.8 million through its humanitarian partners,” the statement said.
The European Union Humanitarian Service (Echo) has donated $350,000 (€326,000) to Care, WeWorld/GVC, Save the Children and the World Food Program to fund shelter, water, sanitation and other emergency relief.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have received EU approval for $1.5 million (€1.4 million) in emergency funds to “respond in coordination with the government to the needs of the population” . “.
The EU “also activated the emergency management service Copernicus to support the humanitarian response with real-time satellite imagery.”
He stressed that support against climate change and the impact of extreme events is “one of the main priorities of the country’s multi-year bilateral support, which has been allocated 428 million euros for the period 2021-2024.”
At the humanitarian level, “€25 million has been confirmed for this year (decision announced March 9) as new funds to meet the needs of the most vulnerable Mozambicans, including in the province of Cabo Delgado.”
