Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Thursday at the age of 96, admired the automotive industry. She not only drove, until the last years of her life, but also knew the mechanics of cars.
In recent years, one of the queen’s hobbies has become especially famous. Because protocol and safety rules prevented her from driving on public roads, the monarch did so most recently using a Land Rover 4×4 on weekend trips to the royal family’s estates.
Despite already failing health, Isabella II performed before the public last June on the occasion of the platinum jubilee celebrations. In honor of the Queen’s long tenure on the British throne, the McLaren brand has released a special edition of its Artura model, calling it “Elizabeth II”.
The newspaper “Diário Clarín” reports that “the Queen’s love for cars began during World War II, when she was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Service and worked in a team of mechanics. While serving in the Royal Army, she learned not only how to drive, but how to repair truck and ambulance engines.”
Isabella II’s passion for cars has led her over the past 70 years to build the Buckingham Palace Garage, complete with a luxurious fleet of cars that cost almost priceless, largely due to the media coverage of those who built them.
