WHO maintains attractiveness of Covid-19 surveillance despite significant decline in mortality

Covid-19 killed 9,400 people globally last week, 65,600 fewer than the weekly death toll in February, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday, continuing to urge governments to remain vigilant.

In February, the number of weekly deaths from Covid-19 reached 75,000.

“We have come a long way and the data is certainly encouraging, but nearly 10,000 weekly deaths is too many for a preventable and treatable disease,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference. a request “to all governments, communities and individuals to remain vigilant.”

WHO figures over the past week point to two million cases worldwide, a number that experts say could be underestimated as diagnostic tests are now done less frequently, leaving many infected undiagnosed.

Since confirmed, the covid-19 pandemic has already killed 6.5 million people and infected 629 million people.

Covid-19 is a respiratory disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which was identified in China in 2019, and has become a pandemic since March 11, 2020.
