Inés de Souza Real will again run for PAN leader at the next congress with the aim of “expanding the voice and representation of the party” and re-election of deputies in Madeira and in the European Parliament.
Speaking to Lusa, the only MP from the People-Animals-Nature party said she decided to “take up this challenge” and become a leader candidate again, because “there is work that remains to be done.”
“When I applied two years ago, I took on the project at a very difficult time, both politically and in terms of the global context that the country and the world are going through, and, at the moment, there is work that is ongoing ”, a PAN spokeswoman said.
“We have achieved, even through constructive opposition, a number of very significant victories for our cause and, considering not only this challenge, but also the need to expand the voice of PAN and its representation in various political spheres, I decided to take up this challenge again,” he added. He.
Inés de Souza Real, who has been leader of the PAN for two years, has chosen “For the causes that unite us” as her candidacy motto, and her representative will be former deputy Bebiana Cunha, who is part of the party’s leadership. .
The candidate also said that she is supported by “several members who throughout the life of PAN, from its founding to the present, have devoted themselves to the party.”
Regarding the goals of the candidacy, Inés de Souza Real indicated that they include “expanding PAN representation in terms of local work bases, creating more councils, more constituencies, continuing the work already done.” .
In terms of electoral issues, the PAN leader pointed to Madeira’s regional elections this year and the European elections in 2024, noting that she wants the party to elect deputies again.
“It is important to save these places where we already had representation, but we also have a pending application to the European family of European Greens, we have established a partnership in which we have integrated the Animal Policy Fund and, given the importance of even more global policy and even the strength of what is the context of the European Union, for us this growth will undoubtedly be a goal that will allow us to give more strength and more expression to those we represent,” he defended.
As for the candidates, the leader declined to name names, saying “everything has its time”, but felt that “there are not enough people of value in the PAN” to be “strong candidates for the European Parliament”.
The spokeswoman gave a “positive assessment” of her mandate, noting “very important achievements” in the Assembly of the Republic, while approving a number of initiatives.
Inés de Souza Real also indicated that she would once again submit proposals for amendments to the statutes that would allow for autonomy for the party’s regional structures and the creation of a youth PAN.
The candidate indicated that her proposal for a global strategy “will always be open to proposals from all affiliates, civil society itself and proposed charters.”
Inés de Souza Real has been the PAN representative since June 2021, being the only leader candidate at the last congress, and is currently the only MP from the party in the Assembly of the Republic.
Former MP Nelson Silva also announced that he would be a PAN leadership candidate.
The date and venue of the next congress will be determined this Thursday at a meeting of the National Political Commission at the suggestion of the organizing committee, which has already been appointed. In addition to electing new bodies, amendments to the PAN bylaws are to be discussed and approved at this large meeting.
The amendments to the charter, approved at the last congress, which took place on June 5 and 6, 2021 in Tomar, were rejected by the Constitutional Court.
Over the past two years, the PAN has gone from four elected deputies to one, having lost its parliamentary group. Inside, Inés de Souza, Real also saw several members leave its board, including Nelson Silva, who positions himself as the most visible face of the “More PAN, act to renew” critical wing.
