Myanmar’s military junta has killed more than 50 people in an airstrike. Among the victims were civilians and children.

Myanmar’s ruling military junta killed between 50 and 100 people, including civilians and children, in an airstrike in the Sagain district on Tuesday.

The military said, according to Reuters, that the target of the attack was an event organized by forces opposed to the regime, and that if civilians died it was because they were forced to help “terrorists”.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, strongly condemned this action and called for those responsible to be brought to justice.

The country is in an atmosphere of instability since the 2021 coup d’état. Ethnic minority armies and resistance fighters have challenged the dominance of the military, which has responded with airstrikes and heavy weapons, including against civilian areas.
