Russia accuses Ukrainians and the UN of blocking grain carriers

On Wednesday, Russia blamed Ukraine and the UN for problems with inspections of ships carrying grain in the Black Sea, which are causing the shipment of more than a million tons of grain to be blocked.

“Currently at the Joint Center in Istanbul [da Iniciativa dos Cereais do Mar Negro] Difficulties are reported with the registration of new vessels and the conduct of inspections, ”said Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry.

According to Russia, these problems “arise only as a result of the actions of Ukrainian representatives, as well as UN members, who, apparently, do not want or cannot solve them.”

Zakharova stressed that Russia had proposed to include ships in the register of approved ships to serve the most needy countries, in particular African ones, and those that have been waiting for more than a month to send grain.

According to a Russian official, Ukraine reacted with hostility.

Maria Zakharova emphasized that “Ukrainians first blocked the registration process, and then stopped all searches, including outgoing ships. [dos portos ucranianos]. There are 27 ships on board with 1.2 million tons of cargo.”

All vessels exporting grain from Ukrainian ports must be inspected by Turkish waters specialists both at the entrance and at the exit.

“As a result of these actions, the percentage of recipients of Ukrainian food in needy countries has fallen to a minimum level. Of the 28.3 million tons of exported cereals, only 742,000, or 2.6 percent, reached their destination,” the voice of the port said.

Zakharova lamented that Europe and the United States accuse Russia of breaking its promises to supply grain to countries most in need and of blocking 50 ships in the Black Sea.

On Friday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres wrote to Ukraine, Russia and Turkey to express his concern about problems in implementing the agreement.

The so-called Black Sea Grain Initiative includes maritime cargo checks by UN, Russian, Ukrainian and Turkish officials to ensure that only food is being transported and not weapons. The Cereals initiative has alleviated the global food crisis and partially alleviated the effects of the global food price surge caused by the Russian military offensive in Ukraine that began on February 24 last year.
