Five people were arrested this Thursday as part of a PSP operation to combat drug trafficking in Porto. The operation targets “a wide range of individuals who have organized drug trafficking in the Porto metropolitan area,” according to a statement released by the authorities.
The 44 home and non-domestic searches occur most frequently in Bairro da Pastelleira, as well as in Matosinhos, Vila Nova de Gaia, Gondomar and Maia.
Speaking to reporters in Porto’s Pastelleira Nova district, PSP director Magina da Silva said that drug use is a “public health issue” and that it is an issue that should concern everyone.
The director of the PSP also said that “Pastelira should be one of the most protected areas in Portugal” and that the authorities had taken 582 actions to “bring back peace to residents who are neither drug dealers nor users.”
PSP guarantees that “there are a large number of drugs, some of which are still packaged as if they were sent from their place of origin.”
The National Director of the PSP announced that this Friday the PSP will be present in Bairro da Pastelleira for the “safety of all citizens”.
This operation, which involves more than 300 PSP members, is the result of an investigation that took about two years.
“This is the culmination of the work of many people, many police officers and many prosecutors. [do Ministério Público] in which it was possible to make a test, and I can tell you that it is going very well, ”concluded Magina da Silva.
