This Friday, SpaceX revealed the reason why the Starship and Super Heavy rocket exploded just four minutes after takeoff. According to the space agency, Starship activated self-destruct mode after it began to lose “several engines during flight tests.”
The spacecraft “lost altitude and began to fall,” prompting the system to activate self-destruct, SpaceX said in a statement, quoted by Fox News. The agency adds that this takeoff was the most successful to date.
The entire test lasted about four minutes before the rocket hit the water. It was the second attempt to launch the spacecraft and rocket together after a technical problem prevented the launch on Monday.
“In tests like this, success depends on what we learn, and today we learned a wealth of information about vehicles and ground systems that will help us improve future spacecraft flights,” SpaceX said.
Founder Elon Musk tweeted that the company “has learned a lot for the next test launch due in a few months.”
