Demonstration of teachers at airports

The “Missão Escola Pública” teachers’ movement promoted “robbery” this Saturday at the airports of Lisbon, Porto, Faro and Beja to show tourists that Portugal is forcing teachers out of the country. Some had packets of cards and passports, alluding to emigration.

In Lisbon, the teachers gathered outside the Rotunda do Relógio and headed to the arrivals area of the airport. “School is out! Costa, this is your fault,” was one of the slogans. “We feel neglected and want to give up,” says Professor Arminda. Salete’s colleague admits: “One student told me that she dreams of becoming a teacher, but she doesn’t think it’s worth it. I replied, “You’re right.”

In Porto, teachers launched paper planes and handed out postcards to tourists, declaring that Portugal was great to visit, but that they were abusive to the teachers. “Did you know that in Mafra you can visit the National Palace, but only 840 meters away there are two overcrowded schools where there are not enough teachers?” one of the postcards said.
