The text is written by Florian Zeller, a name known to the public since he saw “Oh Pai” at the same Teatro Aberto, which brought Joao Perri (another) unforgettable performance. In the same spirit comes to us this “Son”, which the director considers “even more comprehensive”.
“This is a truly tragic play in the sense that there is no one responsible for the problem, no obvious solution,” says Joao Lourenzo, who saw the audience leave the hall with tears in their eyes. “I am touched because I understand that people go away from here and continue to think about what they just saw – and this is always the goal of those who are involved in the theater,” he explains, adding that there are virtues in Zeller’s text that “obliges the viewer to follow him from beginning to end.” However, he admits that, along with playwright Vera San Payo de Lemos, he made “some additions” to it that appear on film and “help illuminate what’s in the boy’s head”.
