This Tuesday marks the 49th anniversary of April 25th. The date will be celebrated in Parliament with a regular ceremonial session following the welcoming ceremony for Brazilian President Lula da Silva.

The participation of the Brazilian head of state caused heated controversy, leading Chega to announce a demonstration against Lula’s trip to parliament. In addition to the protest organized by André Ventura’s party, three other concentrations are planned near the Assembly of the Republic.

The formal session will begin at 11:30 am and eight speeches are expected from the eight parties holding seats in parliament, in ascending order of representation. At the end of the President Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva, with the last speech of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

Most of the deputies, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza and the President of the Assembly of the Republic give Lula da Silva a standing ovation.

“We Brazilians have watched the carnation revolution with admiration,” Lula says, quoting Chico Buarque’s “Tanto Mar” to recall the distance between the two countries.

“A country committed to reducing inequality, fighting racism and fighting gender,” adds Lula da Silva.

“We need to talk about the world. The war cannot continue indefinitely. Every day human suffering is increasing. We condemn the violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine. We believe in an international order based on respect,” he adds.

Lula da Silva’s speech ends with a standing ovation from the majority of deputies. It is enough to replace the applause with noise when he claps his hands on the bench, raising protest posters.

“We know what kind of friendship he has for Portugal. We recognize him as a leader. We see a statesman who won free elections without hesitation in defending them,” he suggests.

“We are two countries, brothers in history and brothers in democratic freedoms.”

The Prime Minister and the President of the Republic have already arrived in Parliament to take part in Lula’s welcoming ceremony and in the official meeting on 25 April.
