Lula da Silva signs the demarcation of six indigenous lands. First in five years

Brazilian President Lula da Silva signed decrees this Friday demarcating six indigenous lands and promised to demarcate “as many” of these lands as possible over the next four years.

The signing ceremony took place during the 19th edition of the Acampamento Terra Livre, when thousands of indigenous people camped in Brasilia this year under the slogan “The Future of Indigenous Peoples is Today. There is no democracy without demarcation!” which refers to some 200 territories claimed by indigenous peoples awaiting demarcation.

“I do not want to leave any indigenous lands that were not demarcated during my four-year term of office, this is a commitment that I made and that I gave you before the campaign,” said Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, having in mind his speech in the previous edition of the event.
