Jose Ornelas says church is ‘not above the law’ on abuse issue

The president of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference (CEP) says the church is “not above the law” and that if victims of sexual abuse file claims that result in compensation being paid, the law will be upheld.

“Compensation is a legal term, you get compensation through the legal process. If someone files a lawsuit, he will follow the law. The law says that those who are responsible for the evil done are the people who did it. we say that no one will be left without help in what is right for his life, ”says José Ornelas in a joint interview with the Lusa agency and the Ecclesia agency.

“What we’re going to do is make help available. And that’s why we don’t put [a questão] in legal terms. If in legal terms, then it is clear that there will be a process and it is clear that we are not above the law,” the saint explained, adding that “people who have been subjected to violence in the church environment, or by people from the church, have and will receive the help they need “.
