Displaced people due to a landslide in Porto slept at the Bom Pastor seminar.

Nine of the 15 people displaced on Thursday by the collapse on Rua 1º de Novembro in Porto saw a light at the end of the tunnel on Saturday evening. Four were received at the Bom Pastor Seminary in Ermesinda by the Diocese of Porto. The remaining five arranged at their own expense a place to sleep. Nine people spent Friday night at a boarding house in Matosinhos organized by social services, but had to leave on Saturday morning.

“Yesterday we tried to find a solution through the social security hotline, but without success. The solutions that were pointed out to us were located more than 50 kilometers from Porto, namely in Braga, Coimbra or Leiria, and did not provide for the transport of people, which was impossible,” explained Alexandre Viana from Associação Habitação Hoje, who has been following from the very beginning these immigrants. However, the decision came at night.

“At around 10:30 p.m., we got a call from the Diocese of Porto to say that if they wanted, these people could stay overnight at the Ermesinde Seminary until Tuesday,” the official explained, saying that five of the nine homeless had arranged temporary accommodation with friends . A solution was found, but only until Tuesday.

“On Tuesday, the problem will return and from now on, the City Council of Porto will be responsible, as the Social Security Service provides temporary answers,” recalled Alexandre Viana. Associação Habitação Hoje promises not to cross his arms and will attend a meeting of the Porto Municipal Assembly next Tuesday to ask for clarification.

“Our association has played the role of municipality and welfare, which is regrettable,” he explained. A meeting is scheduled for the same day in Praça da Trindade to demand a decision. As a result of the partial collapse of a three-story building, 15 people were left homeless.
