A South Korean art student ate a banana that was part of Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan’s “We” exhibition at the Lium Art Museum in Seoul, South Korea. The student said he was “hungry” because he hadn’t had breakfast.
In accordance with BBCAfter eating a banana, student No Hyun Soo attached the peel to the wall. The museum later placed a new banana in the same spot, local media reported.
The Leeum Museum of Art told the media that it would not seek compensation from the student as the banana on display is replaced every two or three days.
“Damage to a work of art can also be considered a work of art, I thought that would be interesting… Isn’t it engraved to be eaten?” KBS.
Upon learning of the incident, artist Maurizio Cattelan said, “No problem.”
This is not the first time a visitor has eaten the bananas used for Cattelan’s work. In 2019, artist David Datuna removed a banana from a wall after the artwork sold for $120,000 (about €109,000) at Art Basel in Miami.
