The mayor of Porto expressed this Friday that he is “very concerned” that “someone” is “killing trees” on Avenida de Montevideo, in Porto’s Foz do Douro.
“Some species of shrubs (…) have been destroyed by human hands and must be replaced,” Rui Moreira said on Facebook. “More serious,” Moreira added, “is the situation of metrosideros — trees classified as high heritage value — that have suffered damage due to a similar action, the long-term effects of which are difficult to assess, despite mitigation measures.”
The mayor illustrates his concern with a set of images revealing the method: “It involves opening a hole in the trunk – with a drill or similar equipment – to inject a product that ultimately kills the tree,” says Rui Moreira. who also appeals to the portuennes, who may have information about these actions, to report this to the police authorities, who are already investigating this case.
According to the website of the Porto City Council, there are currently 82 classified trees, 81 “Metrosideros excelsa” species and one “Metrosideros robusta” species on Avenida Montevideo in the Foz area. Holes made in the trunk of each of the 19 copies were discovered by the municipality.
