Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa told the European Parliament this Wednesday that “war is immoral. This is the mistake of the Russian Federation.” The President of the Republic also stated that “Portugal has been, is and will always be in the first line of defense of the European Union.”
Marcelo mentioned that at the moment “the most pressing issue is to ensure that the war that torments the Ukrainian people and affects other peoples can end in peace. The goal is also to prevent new wars.”
“The European Union cannot forget that on the continents it is difficult to understand that this war is global in nature,” he added.
The President of the Republic also mentioned that Europe cannot separate from the youth, because if it does, “it will create voids that will be filled with populism and other inorganic movements.” Marcelo says we have to work on time before it’s too late.
“We have two options,” he fired. “We have to manage day-to-day affairs and deal with urgent matters,” he explained.
Marcelo also announced that he had invited European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to take part in the meeting of the Council of State, stressing the need to fight populism in the European Union (EU). “We are glad to see you with us in Portugal in June. […] to be the guest of honor in the Council of State,” the head of the Portuguese state said.
“Only a few people have come from abroad to share their experience at such a young age,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, speaking of “a unique opportunity for Portugal and for the Portuguese.”
The President of the Republic spoke at a press conference after meeting with the President of the European Parliament in the European Parliament’s semi-cycle on the challenges of Europe.
