On Monday, a Coimbra court begins hearing the case of a 61-year-old woman accused of stealing more than 80,000 euros from her boss when she was his maid between 2015 and 2019.
A woman currently managing insurance companies living in the Aveiro region is accused of committing a qualified fraud in which she caused damage to an elderly and sick man living in Coimbra, for whom she worked as a housekeeper.
Defendant began working for the victim after responding to an advertisement in the newspaper Diário de Coimbra for the purpose of hiring a domestic servant who would be responsible for looking after the house, making the necessary food purchases for her and the helper, and helping with various daily tasks, including including driving his boss’s car, refers to an allegation that Luz’s agency had access to.
By mutual agreement, the woman settled in the victim’s house, who will pay for her food, have the right to a day off per week and a salary of one thousand euros per month.
The defendant had access to the victim’s bank card in order to make payments related to household expenses and others that were thus determined.
According to the prosecutor’s office (MP), the woman has stopped presenting invoices to the victim since 2017, allegedly in order to use the money in the account to make purchases for herself.
“Over time, the defendant began to use the assistant’s car on her days off, informing him that she would go to Aveiro”, starting to be absent more than one day a week, citing that it would be for visits to the doctor.
According to the deputy, in order to perform the tasks of the defendant during her absence, the assistant eventually hired another domestic servant.
The investigation involves payments in stores such as Oysho, Luxury Clinic, Zara, Giovani Gali, Calzedonia, Sfera, as well as in several restaurants in different cities of the country.
During the investigation phase, the defendant claimed that all the amounts she used were “offers” made by an assistant and that the withdrawals were made with his permission.
The victim in statements for the future assured that the defendant borrowed money from him to pay for medical expenses.
“He said that when the defendant asked him to borrow money, he became very upset, saying that he was in pain and that if he was not cured, he would die,” the instructions for the process say. .
According to the prosecutor’s office, the defendant stated that she needed money for operations and blood transfusions, even being away from the victim’s home for a long time.
In January 2019, an assistant was admitted to the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra (CHUC) due to gastrointestinal problems and ended up hospitalized for 22 days to recover.
“From the day the defendant entered the PUK, the defendant contacted the assistant’s children daily, to whom she informed that he was recovering and that the operation did not lead to complications, and therefore there was no need to travel. to Coimbra to visit him,” the MP said.
When the victim’s children learned that their father was in intensive care, they went to visit him in the hospital, after which the accused reportedly felt “discomfort in his presence.”
The deputy points out that between the borrowed money, transfers, withdrawals and payment for services, the defendant caused damage to the assistant by about 82 thousand euros.
The trial starts on Monday at 9:30 am in the Court of Coimbra.
