Thomas Leal, a warrior boy from Marignays who battled cancer for years, has died.

Thomas Leal, known as the “warrior boy” of Marinhais, Salvaterra de Magos, ended his long battle with cancer on Tuesday after his health deteriorated severely in recent weeks.

The 8-year-old began battling bone cancer in 2019 and was followed up at a clinic in Pamplona, Spain, where her older sister Marta, who has the same cancer, is also being treated.

After several surgeries that gave the family hope in the fight against this type of cancer, in March 2022, Thomas Leal was unexpectedly diagnosed with a new tumor, this time in the soft tissues in the shoulder area.

Despite the operation, the child did not resist the progression of the disease, which in the meantime had spread to other vital organs.

The family’s trials began in 2016 when Marta, now 14, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma that developed on her femur and was followed up at an IPO in Lisbon.

The parents were never satisfied with the leg amputation suggested by the Portuguese doctors and opened the Navarra Clinic in Spain, which offered an alternative approach to this type of tumor.

solidarity
The case of the brothers from Marinais caused a wave of solidarity with paying for expensive treatment in Spain.

baby Matilda
The parents of baby Mathilde, who raised more than two million euros as part of a solidarity campaign, paid for one of Thomas Leal’s operations.

surprise
Thomas’ second cancer was diagnosed during a scheduled consultation at the Clinic of Navarra, where the brothers are being looked after.
