A soldier on a commando course is in an induced coma after suffering from heatstroke. The soldier is hospitalized at the Santa Maria hospital in Lisbon.
On June 12, during a 15-kilometer run with a 5-kilogram load at the 14th kilometer, “a soldier was treated by a military medical team and was called by INEM, who evacuated the military to the Santa Maria hospital,” you can read in the army communiqué.
The soldier was diagnosed with heat stroke and “because of his inherent risks of organ failure, he was placed in intensive care.”
“The neurological situation recommended inducing a coma, a situation in which he remains,” the statement said.
The 139th Commando’s course was interrupted to allow for clinical evaluation of all trainees, who had been resumed in the meantime.
According to the statement, the walking assessment was carried out on June 16 “for a distance of 20 km and with a load of 10 kg, while no deviations beyond the established norms were recorded.”
The Ministry of Defense reacted to the incident and wished the soldier a “quick recovery.” The statement said the situation was under observation “from the first moment.”
The course, now running for 11 out of 17 weeks, is attended by 22 instructors. At the beginning of the course, the number of students was 52 people.
