The President of the Republic announced this Wednesday that he will meet on Thursday with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, and will also take part in a summit on Crimea.
“Tomorrow [quinta-feira] will be a day of active participation in the celebration of Independence Day, meetings with President Zelensky, [e] with the Prime Minister,” Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said minutes after disembarking at Kyiv-Pasazhyrsky train station in the Ukrainian capital on a two-day visit.
This Wednesday, the head of the Portuguese state will take part in a summit organized by Ukraine on the return of Crimea, and plans to “go to an institution dedicated to the very serious problem of Ukrainian children” separated by the war from their families or orphans. .
The president of the republic is also scheduled to visit Bucha, a city on the outskirts of the capital, occupied by Russian armed forces in the first days of the invasion.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa traveled with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, who will also attend the summit and the Independence Day celebrations.
The summit will start at 15:00 local time (13:00 in Lisbon) and should end at 17:00 local time (15:00 in Lisbon).
“We have never recognized that Crimea has ceased to be part of Ukrainian territory. This is the position of Portuguese foreign policy, and once again it is clear. There will be many who will participate digitally, but it was understood that Portugal should participate in person,” said the President of the Republic.
On the possibility of helping the Portuguese Navy in clearing the Black and Azov Seas, which Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov acknowledged on Tuesday in an interview with RTP, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza replied: “Why not?
