Spain rescued 259 migrants from the Canary Islands

Early Friday, Spanish authorities rescued 259 migrants off the Canary Islands after discovering several more boats carrying around 200 people.

The theme dominated much of the informal European Council meeting this Friday in Granada, Spain, and even prompted British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni to publish a joint letter calling on European leaders to address the issue of migration “in urgently,” a problem that divides 27 countries.

This Friday, the prime ministers of Hungary and Poland, meeting in Granada, rejected any possibility of reaching an agreement on a pact on migration and asylum. On the table was a proposal that would distribute migrants among EU member states through a plan implemented by the European Commission and Berlin. The latest data from European institutions indicates the arrival of 160,139 illegal migrants in the EU this year.
