Seven areas of mainland Portugal will be under a red warning between Thursday and Friday due to forecast heavy seas, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said.
Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga will be under a red warning from 09:00 today until 15:00 Friday due to the forecast of “northwest waves of significant height between 7 and 8 metres”. which could reach a maximum height of 14/15 meters.”
According to the IPMA, Faro, Setubal and Beja will be under an orange warning from 15:00 today until 00:00 on Saturday, also due to the forecast of heavy seas.
Guarda, Vila Real and Viseu were under an orange warning until 6:00 this morning.
A red alert is the most severe on a scale of three (red, orange and yellow).
An orange warning is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation, and a yellow warning when there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.”
