The Azores saw a record number of passengers disembarking at airports in October

In October, the Azores recorded a new record for the number of passengers disembarked at airports this month: more than 171 thousand disembarkations, according to data from the Regional Statistical Service (SREA) published this Thursday.

“In October 2023, 171,245 passengers disembarked at Azores airports, representing a positive difference of 7.3% compared to the same month of the previous year,” the air transport report said.

Between 1986 and 2023, the figure recorded in October is the highest for that month, surpassing the record recorded in 2022, when 159,561 landings were recorded, according to SREA data seen by Lusa.

Among passengers disembarking in the Azores in October, the largest number came from flights from the mainland or Madeira (80,715), with a monthly increase of 3.9% compared to the same period last year.

Inter-island passengers (72,400), which led the number of arrivals to the Azores between June and September, were up 7.4% compared to the same month in 2022.

Travelers arriving on flights from overseas recorded the highest monthly increase year-on-year (25.7%) with 18,130 boardings.

According to SREA, all islands in the archipelago saw “positive monthly changes in passenger arrivals compared to last year, with the exception of Corvo,” which recorded a decrease of 2.8%.

Faial was the island with the highest increase (10.8%) compared to October 2022, followed by São Miguel (8.6%), Santa Maria (6.7%), Pico (5.8%) and Graciosa (5%).

The islands of Terceira (4.7%), Flores (1.6%) and São Jorge (0.6%) saw smaller increases.

Sao Miguel, the archipelago’s largest island, accounted for more than half of the landings in October (102,048), followed by the islands of Terceira (35,782) and Faial (11,124).

As for the number of boarded passengers, it reached 178,844, which is 7.6% more than in October 2022.

In terms of flight type, the number of passengers boarded on flights to Madeira and mainland Portugal increased by 5.6% (84,931), by 7.7% on inter-island flights (72,651) and by 16.2% on international flights (21,262).
