A month after the completion of important renovation and expansion work, the interior of the international airport of Recife, capital of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, was inexplicably flooded this Saturday during a storm. Guararapez International Airport, located in the south of the capital Pernambuco, is an important flight route to and from Europe, especially Portugal.
The real flood, widely depicted by incredulous passengers on social media, mainly hit the area where the Delta Express cafeteria is located on the top floor, forcing passengers and employees to flee the area fearing a more serious situation. Large amounts of water began to flow through large lanterns that illuminated a vast area and were lit at this time, leading to fears of a short circuit with unpredictable consequences.
Officials initially tried to alleviate the problem by distributing buckets around the place, but the volume of water falling from the ceiling using electrical wires as a path was too much and they gave up. The floor of the room quickly became flooded and water eventually flowed down and reached the lower floor of the airport.
According to AENA, the company responsible for managing this and other airports in Brazil, the heavy rain that fell this Saturday in Recife led to a rupture of the rainwater drainage pipe, which could not withstand the pressure. With the completion of the renovation and expansion last month, capacity at Recife International Airport, which was already one of the busiest in Brazil due to its strategic location, increased by 60%.
