The A6 and Estrada Nacional (EN) 4 motorways near Elvas in the Portalegre district were temporarily closed to traffic due to the start of a protest by farmers who intend to block the border with Spain.
The “inhabitants of the land”, who came from various municipalities of the districts of Évora and Portalegre, began to gather in this place before 05:00 under the “close eye” of the PNP and began to protest around 06:20.
As Lusa discovered at the scene, traffic was blocked due to tractors stopped or moving slowly on this section of the EN4 road.
Tractors driven by farmers include fireflies and carry Portuguese flags and banners with slogans against government policies in the sector.
Meanwhile, vans enter the A6 motorway junction near EN4, presumably towards the Caia border.
According to João Dias Coutinho of the protest organization, there will be about 150 tractors and 100 vans at the site.
Two kilometers from the Gallegos border, in Marvão, also in the Portalegre region, traffic has been blocked since 6:00 a.m., with only one safety lane remaining, the protest organization told Lusa.
This Thursday, farmers took to the streets with their tractors, from north to south, demanding recognition of the sector and fair conditions in a protest that is expected to block several roads, as has happened in other parts of Europe.
The initiative is organized by the Civil Farmers Movement.
