Pichardo misses three European Athletics Championship finalists

Pedro Pichardo, European and world champion in the triple jump, was not included in the top three finalists of the European Athlete of the Year, which was joined by Sweden’s Armand Duplantis, Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou.

The Portuguese Pichardo, who is also an Olympic champion, was in the top ten finalists, however, he is not among the top three contenders for the award at the annual ceremony to be held on October 22 in Tallinn, Estonia, where Norwegian successor Karsten Warholm, Olympic champion and world record holder in running on 400 meters hurdles.

In the pole vault, Armand Duplantis improved his indoor and outdoor world records, setting a first with 6.20 meters in Belgrade and a second with 6.21 meters at the World Championships in Oregon, his fifth world record.

In 19 competitions in which he participated, in 16 of them he overcame the six-meter mark.

At the age of 21, Jakob Ingebrigtsen lost the 1500m World Championship to Britain’s Jake Wightman, but a few days later he surprised by taking the 5000m gold.

Later, at the European Championships in Munich, he won gold in the 1500 and 5000 meters and then added eight European indoor and outdoor senior titles.

24-year-old Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou excelled by landing the longest indoor long jump in more than ten years, with a score of 8.55 meters, placing him in sixth place in history.

Outdoors, losing the world title to China’s Wang Jianyen in Eugene, he regained the European scepter two weeks later with a championship record at 8.52 meters.

In the women’s sector, the honor to replace the Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan, Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion at distances of 5000 and 10000 meters and bronze at 1500 meters, will go to her compatriot Femka Bol, a specialist in the 400 meters, a Ukrainian high jumper. Yaroslava Mahuchikh or Belgian Nafissatou Thiam, who excels in the heptathlon.
