The doctor of the W52 cycling team of FC Porto, Rui Garrido, said that he was not aware of the use of doping substances by athletes during the trial, which took place this Friday.
Rui Garrido explained that he does not follow the athletes’ daily lives and has never ridden on the group’s official bus, even when going to competitions.
The doctor was heard this Friday at a trial in which 26 defendants were in the dock, suspected of crimes related to the trafficking of substances and prohibited methods in W52 – FC Porto.
Rui Garrido was associated with the cycling team of the Porto football club from 2018, until its disappearance, after an operation by the judicial police, he received about two thousand euros a year, and his role was almost only administrative, in the registration of the teams.
The doctor said he was hired by Nuno Ribeiro, W52’s sporting director, and never had any contact with team boss Adriano Quintanilla.
At the sixth session of the trial, held in a pavilion at the Pacos de Ferreira prison, several judicial police inspectors who searched the houses of the cyclists were also questioned.
Investigators confirmed that they found syringes, needles, doping substances and blood transfusion kits in the athletes’ homes. In the case of cyclist Joao Rodrigues, a resident of Tavira, the substances were found under a bed.
Six cyclists have already admitted in court to using illegal substances. Sporting director Nuno Ribeiro and W52 boss Adriano Quintanilla have yet to make a statement.
